What are EUC benefits?

EUC benefits are benefits that extend the number of weeks you can receive unemployment benefits. EUC benefits are paid in a progression (Tier One, Tier Two and Tier Three).

Who is eligible for EUC benefits?

Eligible applicants are those who have either exhausted their regular state unemployment benefits or have an account that has reached its benefit year.

How do I know if I am eligible?

Eligible applicants who are nearing their benefit year end or are close (within three weeks) to exhausting their regular state unemployment benefit account will be mailed a letter notifying them of how and when to apply.

Is there a deadline to be eligible for EUC?

Yes. To be eligible for EUC Tier One, you must exhaust regular state unemployment benefits before November 21, 2010. To progress to the next tier of EUC benefits, you must exhaust benefits in a tier before the week beginning November 28, 2010 to be eligible for the next tier of EUC benefits.

What are the eligibility requirements?

To be eligible for EUC (federal and state), the law requires that you:

  • exhaust your regular Minnesota unemployment benefits or your benefit year ends after April 30, 2007, and;
  • are unemployed or have your work hours significantly reduced, and;
  • meet the eligibility requirements (able to work, available for work, looking for work) required for regular unemployment benefits, and;
  • not be receiving unemployment benefits from Canada, and;
  • not be ineligible under any other provision of Minnesota unemployment law.

When should I apply for EUC benefits?

Apply the next business day after your regular state unemployment benefit account is at $0.

How do I apply for EUC benefits?

If you are still unemployed and have run out of regular state unemployment benefits (your account balance is $0), you can apply for EUC benefits online or using the automated phone system by selecting the option Apply for Benefits. The self-service system will guide you through the application process.

Detailed instructions are also mailed weekly to those who may be eligible to apply for EUC benefits.

How much will I get in EUC benefits?

The weekly benefit amount of EUC benefits (federal or state) is usually the same as the amount on your most recent regular unemployment benefit account

How long is EUC available?

The last payable week for all tiers of:

  • state EUC is the week beginning March 20, 2011.
  • federal EUC is the week beginning April 24, 2011.

I'm getting EUC benefits, why do I have to apply for a new regular UI account?

A regular state unemployment benefit account is in effect for one year. When the year is over, if you are still unemployed, a new account must be filed. This is true even if you are on an extension. If you cannot establish a new regular state account (you don’t have enough covered wages), you will continue on your extension. You will also continue on your extension if the weekly benefit amount on your new regular state account is at least $100 less or 25 percent less than the weekly amount on your extension (effective for accounts with a benefit year end of July 24th or later).
